All the Key Image Sizes of Social Media Sites to Know ?

Keeping track of what size your images should, or can, be on social media can be pretty tricky. The settings are constantly changing, and it’s very important to keep tabs on these settings. This is particularly true if you’re using social media to promote your brand or business.
We’ve put together a list of all the important image sizes that you’ll need on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Tumblr.

Facebook

On Facebook there are several image sizes to keep in mind, whether it’s images you use on your profile or that you share on the social network. These include your profile and cover photos, as well as the size of images when they’re shared in your Facebook timeline.
The dimensions for your personal Facebook profile are as follows:

  1. Profile Image: 180 by 180 pixels.
  2. Cover Photo: 851 by 315 pixels.
  3. Shared Image in Timeline: 1200 by 630 pixels.
  4. Shared Link in Timeline: 1200 by 627 pixels.
For Facebook Pages, the dimensions are slightly different when it comes to the cover photo:
Facebook Page cover photo: 828 by 315 pixels.

Twitter

Twitter is very similar to Facebook. Important image sizes are your profile and header images, as well as the size of images shared in your timeline. The dimensions for your Twitter profile are as follows:
  1. Profile: The recommended size is 400 by 400 pixels. The picture however will display at 200 by 200 pixels.
  2. Header: 1500 by 500 pixels.
  3. Shared image in timeline: The minimum size for the image to show expanded in a Twitter feed is 440 by 220 pixels. The maximum size is 1024 pixels by 512 pixels. This is particularly useful to pay attention to if you’re placing writing on your images so that users can see the full text when scrolling through their feed.

Instagram

On Instagram, it’s all about images. While it used to be that you could only share square images on Instagram, that limitation has since changed. The dimensions for your Instagram profile are as follows:
  1. Profile: 180 by 180 pixels. (Will display at 110 by 110 pixels. On the web it displays in a circle within a bounding box of 152 by 152 pixels).
  2. Photo: 1080 by 1080 pixels. Instagram scales these photos to 612 by 612 pixels. Now that Instagram has relaxed its rules and doesn’t restrict users to square photos, landscape images can be up to 1080 by 566 pixels, and portrait images are 1080 pixels by 1350 pixels.
  3. Photo thumbnails on profiles: 161 by 161 pixels.

YouTube

There aren’t too many image dimensions to worry about on YouTube, but keeping your thumbnails consistent is one of many good tips to remember when putting together a professional looking channel. In addition to a consistent design, uploading the same size thumbnail is key. These are the following image sizes to keep in mind:
  1. Channel Cover: 2560 by 1440 pixels.
  2. Video thumbnail: 1280 by 720 pixels.
  3. Channel icon: 800 by 800 pixels.

Pinterest

Pinterest is another image heavy social network, and one of the few where portrait images do better than square or landscape photos. Make a note of these image sizes for your Pinterest profile:
  1. Profile: 165 by 165 pixels.
  2. Featured image on a board on profile: 222 by 150 pixels.
  3. Small icons on a board on profile: 50 by 50 pixels.
  4. Width of image in feed: 236 pixels.
  5. Width of expanded image: 736 pixels wide by 1104 to 2,061 pixels tall. (The minimum width of an expanded image is 600 pixels).

Tumblr

With Tumblr there are only two image sizes you need to keep in mind — your profile image and the standard image post. These are the recommended sizes:
  1. Profile: 128  by 128 pixels.
  2. Image posts: 500 by 750 pixels.

Google+

Google+ made some pretty significant changes to its layout last November. While you can still access the old layout, the new layout really lends itself to photography. With this responsive layout, there are a few key image sizes to note:
  1. Profile: 250 by 250 pixels.
  2. Cover Image: 1080 by 607 pixels. Maximum size of 2120 by 1192 pixels.
  3. Shared image: Width of 497. The height will be scaled.

LinkedIn

Lastly, LinkedIn has several types of profiles. There are two types of personal profiles — regular and premium — as well as company profiles. To make sure that you’re putting your best foot forward on LinkedIn, take note of these image sizes:
  1. Profile: 200 by 200 pixels.
  2. Background photo:  1400 by 425 pixels.
  3. LinkedIn blog/status update: 698 by 400 pixels.

If you have a company page, the dimensions do differ:

  1. Cover photo: 974 by 300 pixels minimum.
  2. Logo: The minimum size for company logos is 300 by 300 pixels, but the recommended size is 400 by 400.
